Q: To begin with, could you describe this work?

A: Of course. It is a collection of site specific audio files, triggered by a smartphone geolocation app.

Q: I don’t understand.

A: Put more simply, it’s music that can only be heard in specific places.

Q: Which places are those?

A: The eight places on the previous page. St Mary Magdalen Churchyard (Bermondsey), Burgess Park, Stave Hill etc.

Q: So I have to go there.

A: Yes.

Q: I can’t hear them anywhere else?

A: No.

Q: But I might want to hear them at home. It might be raining.

A: I’m sorry about that. The music is designed to be heard only in that surrounding, in that one place.

Q: Oh, right.

A: And they are free.

Q: I saw that. Why have you called them soundsculptures? I googled soundsculptures and they looked different.

A: I imagined my work existing in the space, even if invisible. In the way a more traditional, solid sculpture might change the feel of the space, the same with music.

Q: And you might not get permission to put a real sculpture there anyway.

A: Quite. Although mine will not clutter the space or leave any mark, assuming visitors are respectful.

Q: Do I have to do them in order? Each one has a number.

A: Ideally yes.

Q: On the same day?

A: Not on the same day.

Q: And I have to do the other things too?

A: Other things?

Q: Meditate. Fast. I have to do these things before listening to the music.

A: You don’t have to do them. You don’t have to do any of it.

Q: …I was only asking.

A: Ideally you will do them. And ideally you will visit each place in order: the work has been designed to be experienced that way. But I’m aware that it might not be possible, and people might prefer just to do what they can. Which is fine.

Q: Should I listen on headphones?

A: Yes. Try to use the best headphones you can find.

Q: Can I play the music out loud? On a speaker?

A: Probably not, as it might disturb people. And some of the detail might be lost. Although the possibility of combining my music with anything other people have made could be interesting? (Feel free to email me with ideas about this.) You’ll probably need to play it out loud for that. But be cool about it.

Q: I will.

A: I know you will.
